چکیده

We report the observation of an acute sensitivity of the anisotropic longitudinal resistivity of twodimensional electron systems in half-filled high Landau levels to the magnitude and orientation of an in-plane magnetic field. In the third and higher Landau levels, at filling fractions n 9 2, 11 2, etc., the in-plane field can lead to a striking interchange of the “hard” and “easy” transport directions. In the second Landau level the normally isotropic resistivity and the weak n 5 2 quantized Hall state are destroyed by a large in-plane field and the transport becomes highly anisotropic.

Metastable resistance-anisotropy orientation of two-dimensional electrons in high Landau levels.

In half-filled high Landau levels, two-dimensional electron systems possess collective phases which exhibit a strongly anisotropic resistivity tensor. A weak, but as yet unknown, rotational symmetry-breaking potential native to the host semiconductor structure is necessary to orient these phases in macroscopic samples. Making use of the known external symmetry-breaking effect of an in-plane mag...

Magnetic Anisotropy in Quantum Hall Ferromagnets

We show that the sign of magnetic anisotropy energy in quantum Hall ferromagnets is determined by a competition between electrostatic and exchange energies. Easy-axis ferromagnets tend to occur when Landau levels whose states have similar spatial profiles cross. We report measurements of integer QHE evolution with magnetic-field tilt. Reentrant behavior observed for the ν = 4 QHE at high tilt a...

J ul 1 99 6 Disorder and Integral Quantum Hall Effect

The quantum Hall conductance of a disordered two-dimensional gas of non-interacting electrons is reexamined for its integrity against disorder in the limit of no mixing between different Landau levels. The exact one-electron eigenstates of the disordered system are shown to be current carrying, with exactly the same Hall current as in the absence of disorder. There are no localized states. Acco...

Strongly Anisotropic Transport in Higher Two-Dimensional Landau Levels

Low-temperature, electronic transport in Landau levels N > 1 of a twodimensional electron system is strongly anisotropic. At half-filling of either spin level of each such Landau level the magnetoresistance either collapses to form a deep minimum or is peaked in a sharp maximum, depending on the in-plane current direction. Such anisotropies are absent in the N = 0 and N = 1 Landau level, which ...

Pseudospin Quantum Hall Ferromagnetism

Symmetry breaking ground states occur in quantum Hall effect (QHE) systems when two or more Landau levels become degenerate near the Fermi level. Isotropic, easy-axis or easy plane quantum Hall ferromagnets (QHF) can form depending on the pseudospins of the involved Landau levels consisting of real spin, orbit radius quantum number, subband index or growth direction. Theories based on Hartree-F...
